ALPHA DIVERSITY

In microbiome analyses, Alpha diversity refers to the species diversity among microorganisms within the gut.

MICROBIOME ANALYSIS

Alpha Diversity

Shannon Index Result

0 6
4.91
1.41 Increase
You have sufficient bacterial diversity for a healthy microbiome.

High diversity and richness are essential for a healthy and resilient gut microbiota. The fundamental principle is that if one bacterial species is unable to perform its function, another can step in to compensate. When there are highly diverse and rich microorganisms in your gut, your immune system becomes stronger and more stable. Therefore, a high Alpha Diversity value is an indicator of a healthy microbiota.

Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes Ratio

Elevated F/B → indicates metabolic risks; low F/B → inflammatory bowel is an indicator of disease. Dietary and lifestyle modifications are recommended to restore balance.

Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes are the two largest phyla of the human gut microbiome. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio (F/B ratio) plays an important role in maintaining proper gut homeostasis is widely accepted.  This ratio has been associated with various clinical disorders.

An increased or decreased F/B ratio is considered dysbiosis. An increase in the F/B ratio is associated with diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, while a decrease in the F/B ratio is associated with inflammatory bowel disease. Therefore, proper maintenance of the balance between Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes in the gut is of great importance, particularly in the treatment of obesity and other metabolic issues.

ENTEROTYPE

Long-term dietary habits influence the dominant bacterial species in the human gut microbiome. The predominant bacteria in a person's microbiota are called enterotypes, and there are three different enterotypes:

  • Bacteroides-dominant type is most commonly seen in individuals who consume large amounts of animal protein, lipids, and processed sugars.
  • Ruminococcus-dominant type is most commonly seen in individuals with high carbohydrate intake. The Bacteroides-dominant type is most commonly associated with high consumption of animal protein, lipids, and processed sugars.
  • Prevotella-dominant type is most commonly seen in individuals who consume high amounts of carbohydrates.

BACTERIUM BACTERIUM LEVEL PERCENTILE RATIO (%)
Klebsiella pneumoniae SPECIES 1.161

Pathogenic bacteria are microorganisms capable of causing disease. Most bacteria are harmless and generally beneficial, but some species can cause infectious diseases and other health problems.

Despite the thousands of bacterial species in the gut flora, it is estimated that fewer than 100 pathogenic species can be found in the human intestine. Examples include Salmonella, Escherichia coli O157::H7, Staphylococcus aureus ve Streptococcus pyogenes are included. These pathogens can be transmitted to humans through food, water, air, contact, and animals. The normal gut microbiome contains various types of beneficial bacteria, and the presence of these beneficial bacteria can inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria. However, factors such as antibiotic use, immune system weakness, or digestive system diseases can affect the normal gut microbiome and lead to the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria.

It is important to protect the gut microbiome and prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Pathogens detected at below 1% in the sample report have not been included in the table.

BIOMARKER BACTERIA

This table shows the percentages of the biomarker bacteria evaluated in your MassBiome analysis, alongside reference values from a healthy population.

A significant increase or decrease in the levels of biomarker bacteria may be an indicator of certain diseases. Therefore, the analysis of biomarker bacteria levels plays a crucial role in assessing gut health, predicting disease risks, and monitoring treatment processes.

Reference values have been specifically calculated for our analysis by comparing the relevant bacterial percentages of healthy and diseased individuals in our database with literature data.

If your biomarker bacteria level falls outside the reference range, it is recommended to consult a doctor.

You can visit the relevant page for detailed information about biomarker bacteria.

DISEASE-ASSOCIATED BACTERIA

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Gut bacteria play an important role in metabolic and inflammatory processes. MassBiome analysis compares the bacterial composition of diseased or healthy individuals with your profile.
Note: A high similarity to diseased individuals does not mean you have that disease; it only indicates that your microbiome profile resembles the profile observed in a disease state.

MassBiome is not a diagnostic test. If you have any concerns about the conditions mentioned, consulting a physician is strongly recommended.
